Chapter Twenty-Five
“Here you go,” Rachel said as she handed over a plastic-wrapped popcorn ball decorated with a smiling jack-o'-lantern face to a small boy in a firefighter costume. Straightening up she looked around the football practice field set up for the citywide annual Fall Festival. It just so happened that Halloween landed on a Saturday this year, and they were having a good turn out with parents bringing their little ones to trick or treat. Rachel was manning the large bowl of wrapped candy and popcorn balls for the trick or treaters while some of her students watched over the cookies, pies, cakes, and other goodies they’d made to raise money for the culinary arts program. Rachel waved to Carly and Sophie when she spotted them across the field. Her friends were manning the football booster club’s tent filled with team merchandise. She smiled watching Sophie hand over big handfuls of candy to the line of princesses, superheroes, and other various costumed clad kids snaking through the grassy field.
Turning back to another group of trick or treaters, a commotion at the next booth caught her attention. With a hand flying to her chest, Rachel watched as David’s ex-wife teetered in five-inch spiked heels and a pair of skin-tight jeans before knocking into a table filled with decorative items from one of the local shops in town. Catching herself before she fell on the ground, Brittany swayed as she grabbed Kimmie and Kyle’s hands. Without apologizing, the young woman began to drag the twins in Rachel’s direction. Plastering a smile on her face, although seething inside at Brittany’s rudeness toward the shop owner, Rachel bent down to one knee as the twins—dressed in adorable cowboy and cowgirl outfits—recognized her and jerked away from their mother to run over.
“Twick o’ tweet!” A huge grin lit up Kimmie’s face as she jumped to a stop in front of Rachel, holding out her plastic pumpkin while Kyle shyly did the same.
Ignoring their mother, Rachel gave each of them two handfuls of candy and a popcorn ball. Standing back up, she gasped as Brittany’s blood-shot eyes struggled to focus in her direction. Rachel had initially thought Brittany’s high heels had her wobbling around on the grassy field, but that was obviously not the case. Barely able to rein in the urge to grab both kids to get them away from their inebriated mother, Rachel understood why David didn’t want another relationship. Who would? Having to deal with someone who so blatantly disregarded the safety of her own children must be weighing heavily on his mind. She would certainly not have the emotional capacity to think about getting involved with someone else if she was dealing with the same situation.
Watching while Kimmie and Kyle trailed behind their mother to the next booth, Rachel decided it might be best to try and get in touch with David and let him know what was going on. She would never forgive herself if something happened to those precious children. She turned to the table and motioned for Mark to come over.
